An Example of Provident Living

There was a family in the ward I grew up in that was almost entirely self-sufficient. Looking back as I a child I did not realize how impressive this was. In fact I thought it was strange that they gardened so much. They were a large family, the mom stayed home and the dad worked for the post office. They needed to make the best of the resources that they had. They truly embraced provident living. They grew almost all of their fruits and vegetables. Their garden was at least half an acre. I grew up in Utah, so it … Continue reading

Embrace Provident Living

We have been counseled to live providently. But what exactly does that mean? I am sure that many within the church automatically think of food storage when it comes to provident living, but in reality it means much more. Provident has several definitions, which include planning for the future and frugal living. It is important that we embrace the many definitions of provident living. The church has counseled us to live within our means. This means to spend less than you make. It also means to avoid going into debt. If you have accumulated debt, it means making the changes … Continue reading

Is Your Family Prepared?

My first experience with talking about food storage to someone who was not a member of the church came just after 9-11. She pulled me aside to let me know that she had purchased extra groceries just in case something happened. She was quite proud of herself, but then she went on to explain the other ways and reasons that she purchased in bulk and in advance. She felt that food storage was a good thing especially for the disasters that may come in our lives. She was right, but sometimes people look at our food storage and provident living … Continue reading

Padding the Resume

Last week, our stake held a career workshop. One of our stay-at-home moms came back revitalized. She confessed that she had always been nervous about jobhunting because she felt her resume to be weak. After the workshop, she realized her many strengths, proven both at home and at church. Although many of us reading this are called to be stay-at-home moms, there are times that mothers enter the workplace. We may take jobs when our children are grown, or we may have the task of supporting our family thrust upon us by the divorce, death, or disablement of our spouse. … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Priorities and Preparedness

When we study the principle of self-reliance, we tend to think of it as a worldly law. And yet, the scriptures clearly tell us that Heavenly Father has never given a law that is temporal; all commandments are spiritual in nature (see D&C 29:34). How, then, is a law regarding our worldly state spiritual? President Kimball clearly states that “the highest achievement of spirituality comes as we conquer the flesh.” As we overcome our earthly bodies and worldly desires, we grow to be more spiritual beings. We generally think of this when we consider overcoming habits, but it applies to … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Buying…Everything They Had ‘On Time’

This week’s lesson for Relief Society and Elders Quorum comes from the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church, and is entitled ‘Provident Living: Applying Principles of Self-Reliance and Preparedness.’ As always, we begin the lesson by drawing from President Kimball’s life experiences before we start reading his quotes. If you flip back to the biography at the front of the book, we learn on page xxii that President Kimball started out his professional life as a bank clerk. Perhaps this experience was one of the many reasons he spoke so strongly against debt in his life. As we read … Continue reading

Three Month Supply

It is interesting to me that we are now being urged to store a three-month supply of food. Since I live in a fairly small apartment this seems much more manageable. It is something that we can acquire fairly quickly and plan easily. If you are unsure on where to begin you can visit www.providentliving.org. The church provides a basic outline of the types of foods that you should be storing. In the guidelines for the three-month supply of food, it suggests that you store food that you are used to eating. In reality this would be a good principle … Continue reading

Why Aren’t You Preparing?

It seems that the message of preparedness has really been stressed lately. It was discussed at General Conference. It was also one of the major topics of my Stake Conference. My bishop also made it the topic of our fifth Sunday lessons last month. At the recent Women’s Day meeting our stake, we learned about the many aspects of preparedness. We all know that it is important. We have been counseled to do it. So have you prepared? Here are a list of common roadblocks and the way to get around them. 1) I don’t have the money to buy … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week in Review: April 2nd – April 8th

Gospel Doctrine: This week’s Gospel Doctrine covers the upcoming lesson 13, “I Will Give Unto Thee the Keys of the Kingdom,” which involves Matthew 15:21-17:9. In “Great Is Thy Faith”, we examined the faith of the Canaanite woman who asked the Savior to heal her daughter, and how we can press on even when we seem to receive no answer to our pleadings. In The Signs of the Times, we considered the fact that we might look too often for the sensational and miss the small and simple signs of the Lord. In “Flesh and Blood Hath Not Revealed It … Continue reading
